If you’ve been around the high-tech market as long as I have, you’ll know that the word “start-up” prompts two main responses in people: uncontrolled salivation or a record-breaking dash to the nearest exit. The high-tech boom/bust of 2001 has left an indelible mark on the industry.
When the dust began to settle after the tech bubble burst, investors began looking for start-ups with well-seasoned, experienced management. Which brings me to MaagComm+, a new communications consultancy spearheaded by Avnet Inc. veteran Al Maag. MaagComm+ will work with select clients to develop unconventional solutions for marketing communications challenges.
Al most recently managed the branding, public relations, internal/external communications and community relations activities for high-tech distributor Avnet and prior to that, Molex, a connector manufacturer. He was also the chairman of the Business Marketing Association (BMA) from 2011-2012.
The consultancy will draw on Al’s marketing communications network including the marketing firm Spark Design, where Maag will be a consultant-in-residence; Jan Miller, a multi-faceted writer who has been working with Maag for almost 30 years; global public relations firm Brodeur Partners; and Zack Maag, a freelance audio visual producer.
Al would probably argue that “well-seasoned” is a nice way of saying “old.” That’s far from the truth. Al and his team are among the most forwarding-thinking and energetic people I know and have experience in every facet of the communications business. They are as close to a “sure bet” as anything you can get in the current market environment. To Al and his team: Electronics Purchasing Strategies wishes you all the luck in the world.
