Laconia, N.H. − In a move to meet growing customer demand for complete thermal management solutions, Aavid Thermalloy has formed a Quick-Turn & Prototype Business Unit at its Laconia headquarters facility. The business unit will serve customers worldwide.
The vertically-integrated company offers a large inventory of extrusion profiles, heat pipes, liquid cooling components, fans, and other components, making it possible to meet quick-turn requirements. The business unit includes a complete manufacturing cell, along with dedicated engineering and design support.
"Customers are looking for us to provide them with a complete solution; not just a component, so we're becoming more of a complete solutions provider," said Robert Soucy, director of Aavid's Quick-Turn & Prototype Business Unit.
These complete modules or systems can include the enclosure, control boards, and thermal management devices.
Soucy call its electronic packaging for thermal management. With a focused and dedicated team Aavid wants to help its customers get their products to market quicker to give them a marketing advantage, he said. "We're offering what we always provided but with a greater focus on it and a dedicated team behind it."
"There is manufacturing involved, but there is also a lot of design work," Soucy said. "We have design centers around the globe staffed with engineers."
Aavid has dedicated a certain amount of capacity and dedicated people to provide quick-turn and prototype thermal solutions to customers when they need it, said Soucy. They also have a "significant inventory of raw materials" as well as plants worldwide to help meet customer requirements.
In some cases, Aavid can turn around orders in 24 to 48 hours, with quantities ranging from one to 10 or 20 pieces, depending on product complexity. If there is a lot of design work involved, customers shouldn't expect a one-day turnaround.
However, Aavid can tap into any of its six design centers around the world to work with customers on a quick-turn or prototype solution. Design centers are located in New Hampshire, California, Italy, India, as well as two locations in Asia.
Aavid also recently moved its headquarters to Laconia to improve the company's communications by locating its sales and engineering teams together with its manufacturing operations.
