Tokyo, Japan − TDK Corp. has introduced an ultra-low-profile varistor family, which is about 80 percent smaller than its predecessors, for electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection of mobile equipment. The EPCOS multilayer varistors, part of the CeraDiode family, measures 0.47- x 0.47-mm with a low profile of 0.1 mm in LGA packaging. These SMD protection components are available in EIA case sizes of 0402, 0201 and smaller.
The CeraDiodes offer an ESD immunity of 15 kV or 25 kV, depending on the type. The clamping voltage is 70 V or 90 V at a pulse voltage of 8 kV (IEC-61000-4-2), depending on the type. Thanks to their low capacitance, the signal integrity of high-speed interfaces are not impaired, said TDK.
TDK attributes the miniaturization breakthrough to a combination of new and extremely efficient semiconductor material and its micro core technology. "The new ZnO material provides significantly more grain boundaries per volume, which increases the ability of the components to absorb ESD pulses by a factor of 50," said TDK. The micro core components can also be integrated into 3D circuits and modules.
The miniaturization, improved performance, and low cost of the devices make them suitable as a replacement for TVS diodes, said TDK. These devices are typically used in RF components in mobile communications devices and high-speed interfaces such as HDMI.
