In a typical electronics product, a system is only as strong as its weakest link. Therefore, it is the best interest of system builders to ensure none of the parts or subassemblies it uses are suspect.
The U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), which currently uses Applied DNA Sciences’ DNA-based anti-counterfeiting technology for microcircuits, is considering expanding the DNA-marking program for other high-risk items. DLA has adopted the program in an effort to stem the tide of counterfeit electronics components entering the supply chain of the U.S. Department of Defense and other agencies. Defective parts in defense systems are literally a matter of life and death.
At the recently held 2013 Electrical and Electronics Industry Outreach Forum, the conference included a briefing by DLA about SigNature® DNA Marking of Microcircuits. Currently there is a requirement for SigNature DNA marking of all Federal Supply Class (FSC) 5962 microcircuits supplied to DLA. That presentation is included within a larger document published by DLA on to its website, and which can be found here, in slides numbered 24-43.
Slide 42 of the briefing, stated that:
DLA is exploring [SigNature] DNA marking, along with other technologies as a possible solution to mitigate counterfeits in these high risk items:
FSC 3110, Bearings (Aviation)
FSC 4730, Fittings, Hoses, and Tube (Land & Maritime or L&M)
FSC 5325, Fasteners (Troop Support)
FSC 5935, Electrical Connectors (L&M)
FSC 5961, Semi-conductor Devices (L&M)
While these commodities represent the higher risk items DLA procures, overall, the Agency manages 5.1 million items assigned to 548 different Supply Classes. DLA procures 93 percent of electrical and electronic parts procured in support of the DOD services.
These commodities are of various sizes, shapes and substrates and represent a meaningful volume of parts procured by DLA. "Applied DNA's commercial experience in marking everything from copper cables to plastic sheaths to textiles is transferable to these FSCs," stated Dr. James A. Hayward, President and CEO of Applied DNA Sciences.
