SAN FRANCISCO—Shipments of smartphones are projected to rebound in 2017 after a lackluster 2016, according to a new forecast from market research firm International Data Corp. (IDC).
IDC said Wednesday (March 1) it expects shipments to reach 1.53 billion units in 2017, up 4.2 percent compared to last year. The firm said it expects shipments to grow by an additional 4.4 percent in 2018.
The forecast is good news for an electronics supply chain that has become increasingly reliant on the smartphone as a driver. While shipments of PCs have plummeted in recent years, robust smartphone growth has driven growth in many chips and components.
