Abracon, LLC (Abracon), The Heartbeat of the IoT®, a leading global manufacturer of frequency control, timing, synchronization, RF, connectivity and power solutions collaborated with NXP® Semiconductors to address prototyping and small production needs in the Internet of Things (IoT) sector. Abracon contributions to the NXP kit include timing, RF and Near Field Communications (NFC) antenna solutions specifically selected to match the needs of NXP’s microcontroller (MCU) and RF/SOC chipsets. The NXP Rapid IoT prototyping kit was first announced during Embedded World in February 2018 and is now available through major distributors.
IoT devices have grown in complexity with more advanced computation, sensing and enhanced connectivity/RF requirements that include sophisticated hardware, firmware and software development. Simultaneously, the industry has compressed design cycles for established design teams and startups alike. Rapid IoT prototyping kits based on the Kinetis® K64F MCU and KW41Z BLE/Thread/Zigbee low power RF IC from NXP provide a ready-to-manufacture starting point for IoT designs complete with schematic, bill of materials (BOM) and software support.
“With the NXP Rapid IoT prototyping kit, we unlock the IoT to a broader spectrum of innovators,” said Sid Shaw, Sr. Director, Global Sales & Marketing for NXP Semiconductors. “Regardless of background or skill level, innovators can take advantage of the kit to quickly develop sensor to cloud solution prototypes, as easy as 1-2-3.”
“NXP is ahead of the game recognizing that prototyping IoT designs has been too complex,” says Juan Conchas, Director of Marketing with Abracon. “This kit aims to eliminate hardware challenges of first prototypes and early production runs, allowing engineering teams to focus on their company’s primary intellectual property and core competencies. With key BOM items in inventory at major distributors, this reference design greatly simplifies and speeds development, design and procurement of hardware necessary to bring IoT applications to life.”
The bill of materials for this kit calls out six Abracon components including four- quartz crystals, a chip antenna and an NFC antenna. The Abracon devices support NXP’s MCU, wireless SOC and NFC functions. All components used within the kits are available and supported by top Abracon distributors enabling fast and easy procurement out of the gate. Engineering teams taking advantage of this support model can go from concept to small run production cost effectively and faster than ever before.
